PUREBREDS

Back to Basics!

Nelson Family Ranches have changed our Purebred Breeding Program under the direction of Kelly Millward towards easy doing fertile range cows. They calve in May and June on grass and cows and calves are assessed to ensure sound structural cattle.

Our Back to Basics program is designed to make bulls that can go right to work and last! Our bulls go through the GrowSafe program and in the spring, we move them to the grass fields where they can travel through the hills to promote strong legs and good feet. If they can't gain weight on grass or they are unable to travel, they are culled. In the fall and early winter they go on swath and bale grazing. Approximately two months before the sale they return to the Stirling Feed Yard and are housed in 20-acre backgrounding pens where they're fed a silage ration.

Young stock go through Grow Safe trial so Nelson Family Ranches can identify efficient and low maintenance animals with acceptable behavior, scrotal, heifer pregnancy, milk and carcass.

HerdTrax is used to identify ferti
lity of cows with longevity so they can propagate their genetics through their offspring.

We continue to be leaders in the industry and appreciate your continued support!
