OUR HISTORY

Nelson Family Ranches originated in Canada in 1904 when Alonzo (Lon) Nelson and his three brothers came to Stirling, Alberta from Mount Pleasant, Utah. Alonzo's father Nels, eventually came to Stirling and bought land. Alonzo later purchased land 1/2 mile east of Stirling. They got established in farming, and survived.

Lon's son, Farrell bought some of Lon's land and became a full time farmer/ rancher. He raised cattle, sheep, sugar beets, grain and hay. Their intent became simply expansion.

Farrell's son, Grant returned from university in 1968 and became involved in the operation. Since
Grant took over the fourth generation tradition of agriculture, we have continued to grow and today the sixth generation of Nelsons are following in their father's footsteps.

Grant and Farrell's philosophy is if you don't expand you can't survive. It took careful planning and staying true to their vision of progress to be prepared for land purchases as they became available.

Diversification has grown with expansion, progress and balance. Irrigation, cattle, grain and hay have always been an important part of Nelson Family Ranches. Grant installed the first center pivot irrigation in the Stirling area around 1975.

Knowing that we had a huge supply of gravel on our ranch, led us to the gravel business, when time and price were right.

Today Nelson Family Ranches is owned and managed by Jeff Nelson, Jimmy Nelson, Kevin Nelson, Shawn Nelson and Josh Smith.
